Why you need an Information Strategy

Organisations are bursting with information and systems that try to control it. But most lack a focussed strategy to effectively leverage this information and its underlying technology.

Given that organisations are eager to make the most of what they have, using information for competitive advantage or increased efficiency is extremely important.

What is an Information Strategy?

An Information Strategy is not the same as an Information Technology Strategy - although they are strongly related. An Information Strategy identifies and builds on a shared vision of the future of an organisation, and maps a considered and practical way to get there. It supports and is informed by the business strategy and other medium to long term goals.

A good Information Strategy illustrates the ways an enterprise can use its information to achieve competitive or efficiency advantage. It maps forward the ways an enterprise can collect, create, and use its information to benefit its operation and future sustainability.

Without a coherent Information Strategy an organisation may not be using its most important asset - its information.
