Organisational Development

Often the forgotten element of an information programme. Unless all the people in the organisation understand what to do with the information they create and access no information system implementation will be successful. Having created a document the user needs to be empowered to make the most intelligent decision possible about how to describe it and where to store it.

Elements of the organisation development (OD) programme include:

  • Training: This includes training on how to use specific systems but also more broadly on information literacy – the general information skills that all people in modern organisations need. (MARC link to training pages here)
  • Competency Models and Performance management: The old adage that what gets measured gets done is true of information management. To improve organisational performance individuals need feedback on their information management performance, measured against specific information competencies.
  • Policy: Clear statements outlining your organisations intentions to delivering on its information obligations. Critical for communicating what is required to the people of your organisation but also potentially for external stakeholders such as regulators.
  • Procedures: Specific guidance on how to undertake information tasks. Often we find that while people might understand in general what is required the detail of how to do it is not available.
